It was a joy to join Micah and Brittany as they dedicated Evan Daniel Siebert to the Lord this past weekend.
What a special time to worship God’s gracious provision of a son. Children are a gift from the Lord for which we give Him praise and thanksgiving (Psalm 127:3). We know that we are stewards of one of the greatest things entrusted to us, to shape the very hearts and souls of our kids.
Dedication is also an act of surrender to our Great Provider. Just as Abraham surrendered Isaac to the Lord, believing He would keep His covenant promise, so also we surrender our children into the Lord’s hands. We know that “if God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things,” (Romans 8:31-32). “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 1:6). We can trust God will provide.
Dedication is also a commitment to serve for the praise of God’s glory. We are not raising our kids for our own glory. It is our commitment to raise our children according to the ways of the Lord, bringing them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). We teach them the habits of healthy living (training) and help them understand why God’s ways are important (instruction).
It is not only the commitment of the parents that we encourage. We recognize that the there are many people involved in raising our kids in the ways of the Lord. It is also our hope that the extended family and spiritual family of our local church also commit to encouraging and helping each of the children under our care to know our holy and loving God, trust in Jesus as their Savior, and follow after Him with their whole lives.
